Over the last term, the magnificent Angell Piano Trio have been involved in giving guidance and inspiration for AS and A level music students’ compositions, a major part of coursework. Students were invited to the University of Essex, for a ‘composition workshop’ session with the Angell Piano Trio; during which the Trio performed a number of pieces by composers including Ravel and Shostakovich, and the work of a contemporary British composer, Peter Fribbins.

The workshop proved to be a hugely inspirational day, and the Trio’s advice was immensely valuable to the participating students, aiming to compose music that would be played by the Trio in a concert.

The Angell Trio’s next visit was to the Sixth Form College, where the students’ compositions were played, and additional advice and suggestions were given. It was also a good opportunity to obtain a recording of the compositions with live instruments.

Thursday 27th April saw the Angell Piano Trio putting on a concert at the Theatre, which featured the students’ compositions, plus an astounding performance of Ravel’s Masterpiece Piano Trio. Some of the students had the opportunity to play with the Trio in front of a public audience.

This was a hugely valuable experience for the participating students, as well as a rare opportunity to have their own compositions performed by three spectacular musicians; and an experience they will take with them and undoubtedly learn immeasurably from.
